The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will give place to another attraction

Work continues on the demolition of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction at the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World. This once popular Fantasyland attraction is being removed and a new area for future development will be created in its place. Assistant development manager at Walt Disney Imagineering, Adrienne Messenger said the project will take several months to complete.

The first priority of the project is to take down the ride structure and enough of the adjacent rockwork to allow the access into the lagoon area by trucks to carry the remains of the attraction out. The only things that will be left are the north and east walls of the ride building so they may be used as retaining walls.

Cast Members have already removed all reusable show props and Horticulture Cast Members will be removing the current landscaping to be used around the theme park.

After demolition has been completed the truck will start to bring in approximately 70,000 cubic yards of dirt to fill the lagoon and bring it up to the same height as the neighboring land. After the land fill has been compacted and graded it will be irrigated and landscaped, you will see a four to six foot berm all the way around what used to be the lagoon.
