Traveling with Seniors
Planning Essential for Seniors Traveling

Traveling with Seniors

For senior citizens, traveling is a way to visit family, see old friends or just take a relaxing vacation. Modern travel is a convenience that can be a pleasant experience for everyone including seniors. To ensure that traveling with seniors is safe and enjoyable you will want to spend time preparing and planning for a safe and enjoyable journey.

Before traveling with a senior make sure they have received a recent check up and have all of the medications necessary for the duration of the trip. It is also a good idea to have the doctor write out any prescriptions the senior will need in case any medications are lost or misplaced. Also, any prescription medication should be stored in the original prescription bottle to avoid any security or legal issues.

When packing, travel medications should be placed in a carry-on bag. This will ensure that the traveler will always have access to medications even if their checked luggage is lost or arrives late. Before reaching the airport make sure that all bags are tagged with contact information including names, address and phone numbers. If your flight itinerary dictates long distances between gates it may be a good idea to arrange for a wheelchair at the airport. Even if you did not arrange for a wheelchair, don't hesitate to ask your airline representative and they will help arrange for one.

Travel a day early to make for a more relaxed trip. By planning on traveling one day ahead of any main activity you can make sure that you will arrive early and everyone can get plenty of rest before the next day. Seniors will appreciate the down time and it will give everyone the opportunity to spend an additional day together. If you are planning on staying at a hotel arrange for adjoining hotel rooms. This will allow you to enjoy some privacy while still being close to one another. Do not schedule too many events for one day and plan scheduled times to relax or take naps. By not rushing seniors they will feel more relaxed and comfortable and you will be able to spend better quality time together.

Take the time to plan, and traveling with seniors will be easy, relaxing and enjoyable for all.
